Hey, peeps who have played Final Fantasy 9:

Is the reason it's so universally canned because the characters are chibi, or is it really not that good a game?

7 bored me within an hour, 8 bored me within an hour, but the clips I've seen of 9 look really interesting, probably BECAUSE the characters are chibi-looking.  But I don't want to invest, like, hours of time if the game isn't really that good.

Any input would be appreciated.

7 and 8 both seriously bored you? If you're not a Final Fantasy fan, I wouldn't bother with 9. I loved it, but I also adored 7, 10, and 12. I didn't get into 8, but I just didn't take the time. If 7 and 8 didn't do it for you, I doubt 9 will either.

And I'm sure it gets backlash because of the style, because it's no different than 7 and 8 gameplay-wise.

7 got my goat because it was set in such a technical world and 8 I never got into because I had to return it to Blockbuster. The gameplay was all right, but not good enough to make me rent either again. If I (coughcough)download 9, think I'll enjoy it?

I haven't played it, but I've always enjoyed the design elements of the game. I've had the artbook forever without ever having played it, ha.

Take it from someone who's played and beat 'em all: Final Fantasy 9 is among the best FF games ever made. It was the last game for several long-time staff members so the game is chock full of old-style elements such as four-person parties. The chibi style takes it roots from the old SNES sprites for instance.

The gameplay is also very fun and rather addictive with interesting characters and a great plot. I don't see why 9 is bashed; a lot of people I've talked to have said wonderful things about that game!

9 is a very fun game and has a good balance of both light-heartedness and darkness as well.
It's a lot different from 7 and 8, so you might enjoy it. Next to 4 it's probably my favourite.

Also, steal from every boss. More than once. It's worth it.

FF9 was a game where the team was supposedly going back to their roots. The mages are reminiscent of the very early FF games (FF1 through 4), for instance. Nobuo Uematsu took that to heart the most, in fact. The game has a lot going for it.

Still, even with all of that goodness, I just couldn't get past the ugly character design and couldn't bring myself to buy a copy.

If you actually like the character design though, and have a longing for a taste of what Final Fantasy used to be, it may be a worthy game for you.

"Universally canned"? Seriously? Wow. In my experience, that honour usually falls to FF8!

In my opinion, FF9 is among the most enjoyable and fun of the Final Fantasy games, partly because of its more lighthearted tone. The characters were far more engaging, to me, than the other two - and I love FF7!

My friend says it's her favorite FF game.

I've played most of the FF games, and 9, though I never did get around to beating it, was one of the ones I enjoyed the most. It also has one of my favorite characters of all time, so maybe I'm a bit biased. (Freya<3)
